Despite never having left the US, this woman now sounds like a full fledged Brit.
Michelle Myers, of Arizona, has been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome after waking up one morning with a British accent.
Myers has experienced this before, speaking in both an Irish accent and an Australian accent. These lasted for about a week before they went away on their own. However, the British accent has stuck with her since 2015.
Doctors are unsure of what causes this to happen, though they do believe it is neurological in nature and can be related to strokes or neurological trauma.
“They send in the psychiatrist at the hospital and make sure you’re not a loon,” Myers said.
“Some people think it’s physiological; others think it’s psychological,” said Myers. “People like me — we don’t care which one it is. We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that’s going to hurt me, help me.”
