NJ Students Protest After Teacher Makes “Speak American” Comment to Class

A teacher in a New Jersey high school is feeling the heat after this comment.

The teacher was caught on video by a student’s cell phone telling the class of high schoolers that people are not fighting for them to speak Spanish, but to “speak American.”

Several students walked out of the class, and many protested in a walkout at the school over what they say are belittling and discriminatory comments made against them. The school has approximately 30 percent Hispanic students.

The students are fluent in English but were allegedly whispering in class in Spanish, and the teacher became irritated with this. Other students claimed the same teacher, an English teacher at the school, would often single them out in the halls if she heard them speaking Spanish and tell them to stop.
