A 16-year-old boy died while trying to ride the over-the-top waves produced by Hurricane Irma.
Zander Venezia died while surging in Barbados as Hurricane Irma ripped through the area. He drowned after being knocked unconscious on shallow reef. “Zander was such a good, funny kid. He was always joking and he just loved surfing,” Alan Burke, a close friend, told Surfline. “He was so jovial, such a joy to be around. I can’t believe he’s gone. I’m a mess, man. We’re all a mess over here.”
Several professional surfers were in the area to take advantage of the waves.
